In 1965 Mephisto is established in Sarrebourg, France, by Martin Michaeli. Mephisto shoes are being sold in France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Benelux. By 1975 Mephisto shoes become an international brand. Its revolutionary concept will become the worldwide reference. The original Mephisto line is born.
During the 1980's Mephisto enjoys tremendous growth and success. The first retail store to sell only Mephisto shoes and products is open in Germany. By 1984 Mephisto takes a major step in globalizing, as the company opens its first foreign subsidiary in Japan. In 1987 Mephisto shoes begin distribution in the United States. Mephisto's U.S headquarters are established in California. In 1989 Mephisto continues the companies expansion, when Mephisto's Canadian headquarters are established. The ingredients of comfort, technology, and natural materials make Mephisto shoes enormously popular with the Canadian consumer.
The success that the company enjoyed in the 1980's, continues into the 1990's, as Mephisto would capture its second French Oscar for export. The prestigious award signifies the company as an international player in the comfort market. By 1995 the 150th Mephisto concept store is open. By 1998 there are over 600 styles of Mephisto shoes for Men and women. Mephisto shoes and products are sold in 50 countries. The Mephisto brand is in 18,000 stores, including over 350 concept locations. The success and comfort of Mephisto shoes make Mephisto the most respected line in France. In 1999 French retailers select Mephisto as the 'best shoe brand in France'. Mephisto concept stores are open in France and China.
Mephisto begins the new century by winning the award for 'Best shoe brand in France', for the 2nd time. In 2001 Mephisto wins the 2001 Plus award for Design excellence in the Men's comfort category, by U.S magazine 'Footwear Plus'. Today, Mr. Michaeli still owns and operates Mephisto from the original factory and world headquarters in Sarrebourg, France.
